Things Not to Do Writing a Cover Letter

When on a job search, first impressions are of utmost importance. A number of the most hard working employees, who deserve the job they are applying for make some of the worst impressions on prospective employers, while some of the worst employees often make excellent first impressions as job applicants. So, why does this matter? Truthfully, it is exceedingly simple to make a good first impression in writing, but often individuals make careless mistakes. When writing a cover letter for your resume, the following things should be avoided:
Not Requesting an Interview: Employers are seeking job applicants with initiative. If you are forthright and professional in your request for an interview, you increase the likelihood of obtaining one.
Appearing Vague and Unfocused: Your cover letter is a professional introduction to yourself and your career. Don’t deviate from your skills or career goals. If you write about yourself, be certain that you don’t give details about recreational activities or goals that aren’t related to your career interests.
Being too Stylistic. A resume that is well designed is appropriate, but don’t include distracting symbols or artistry. Even if you think your flowery cover letter is charming, it may only make matters worse if received by a male employer. Use clear and legible fonts, italicize and/or bold if appropriate, but don’t go overboard.
Sending the Same Letter to Each Job: The ultimate mistake is that many applicants utilize the same cover letter for every job opening. Your cover letter should be as professional and precise as your resume. Make each cover letter unique, don’t use a one size fits all approach. You don’t have a draft a new cover letter for every prospective employer, but you should make sure it is unique and finely tuned to address the particular employer.
I trust these suggestions will assist you in composing your cover letter!
